Our professional advisors offer free, customized guidance to motivated individuals, companies, and philanthropists who want to make the biggest difference with their resources.
Below, we share sample advising services EA NYC offers. We welcome advisees exploring one or more of the below areas, as well as topics we have not listed that may be within our purview. Our team works to be transparent about our scope and refer advisees to external experts in cases in which we’re unable to provide the best support.
Career Coaching
Many people want to improve the world but are unsure how to do it. Which job makes the biggest difference? How can I use my knowledge and experience to make the world a better place? We help people who are motivated to do good to answer these questions. Regardless of your career stage, we will support you in answering fundamental questions, assessing your values, building a network, and finding opportunities that are the right fit for you. Like all of our services, this guidance is free.
What to expect
During an introductory call, you will have the chance to share with the advisor information on your background, interests, and currents needs. The advisor will use this to assess next steps, ranging from one or more follow-up calls, to introductions to relevant individuals and organizations, to concrete recommendations and referrals. Our guidance is based on over a decade of work in the effective altruism community on methods for using one’s career to bring about the greatest positive change, our advisors’ personal experience in mission-driven roles, and the hundreds of career advising sessions EA NYC conducts each year.
Donor Advising
Many people want to donate money to make the world a better place, but it is difficult to know where the money will do the most good. Which charities use the money most effectively? In which area can donations make the biggest difference when many feel so important? We help donors answer these questions and support those who want to ensure that their donations make a big difference. Whether you are dipping your toes into donating for the first time or a large funder exploring new possibilities, our free advising services are for you.
What to expect
Our initial call will be structured around mapping your interests, priorities, and uncertainties. The advisor will use this to assess next steps, such as researching specific questions, making introductions, and arranging one or more follow-up conversations. Sample cause areas we make donation recommendations within include, but are far from limited to: global health and development, animal wellbeing, environmental protection, safeguarding the future, global catastrophic risk mitigation, and strengthening the effective altruism movement. If your area of interest is not on this list, please contact us and we will either confirm our ability to provide support or help route you to a more appropriate advisor. Our advice is based on the work of organizations such as GiveWell , Open Philantrophy , EA Funds , Animal Charity Evaluators, and Giving Green . The advice is free of charge.
