Summer 2024 EA NYC Updates

We’re excited to announce that EA NYC is currently accepting applications for a new Executive Director! You can see the job posting here; applications close July 21 at 11:59 pm ET.

In the meantime, for those wondering about any changes to expect to the EA NYC team in coming months, we’'ll continue to post relevant updates below.

Here’s the latest news as of the end of June 2024:

Alex Rahl-Kaplan, Co-Director

We’re sad to share that Alex will be leaving the EA NYC team this August. Fortunately, we’re also excited about the reason behind their departure: Alex will be continuing their EA community building work on the team of our largest funder, the Community Building Grants Program within the Centre for Effective Altruism.

Alex has served in a coordination role for EA NYC since 2022 and has helped to organize and lead over 100 events; they will miss having such frequent opportunities to learn from our kind and thoughtful community members.

You can reach Alex through July 31 at their EA NYC email address, and you may still spot them on Slack or at occasional EA NYC events afterward!

Rockwell Schwartz, Co-

Director

Rocky has been the Director/Co-Director of EA NYC since 2021. Under her leadership, EA NYC has professionalized, incorporated as a NYS nonprofit, and significantly expanded our programming, reach, and impact.

As EA NYC’s structure and organizational needs have shifted, Rocky no longer feels her interests and skills are best reflected in the organization’s directorial needs in its current stage. Once a new Executive Director is onboarded, Rocky is looking forward to transitioning to a more specialized role that better reflects her passions.

Over the next months, Rocky will be focusing on fundraising to support EA NYC. During a biannual strategy meeting, the EA NYC staff and board identified expanding both the capacity and autonomy of EA NYC as organizational priorities. If you are interested in supporting our work, reach out to her or consider donating online!

As always, Rocky remains available to discuss career planning and support with community members, including her own career journey!

Megan Nelson, Community Health Coordinator

Megan is a licensed master social worker in New York State who has also served as a part-time Community Health Coordinator for EA NYC. Megan has acted as a confidential community liaison for community members as well as a strategic advisor to Alex and Rocky.

Megan’s capacity varies depending on her day job, but she is invested in supporting the EA NYC community and would be available as a resource to the new Executive Director! You can continue to reach Megan with any concerns by email or through her anonymous contact form.

Though this is a time of transition, you can expect EA NYC to continue serving as your local EA resource center and community hub, facilitating programming designed to support you in doing good better.

We also expect that August and September will be quieter months for us, with fewer EA NYC-facilitated events while we focus on hiring and onboarding a new Executive Director. We encourage the community to continue organizing #casual_plans and #coworking through the EA NYC Slack!
